Home Fitness

Although I have had two weeks off I have spent less time at the gym. First of all, I have been very busy visiting relatives, catching up on house cleaning, and spending time with my husband. Also, I am not the only person who needs days off. Gyms close during my break in order to give fitness trainers a break too. Therefore, I have learned to squeeze in my workouts at home. This is not a bad thing because it encourages me to use my own body weight, which in a lot of ways is more challenging than lifting barbells or dumbbells. I do a lot of squats, planks, mountain climbers, push ups, and other exercises that involve using my own body weight. Since I didn’t need any equipment I was able to work out anywhere. Below I have posted a link that gives several exercises you can do at home, using your own body weight.

I just saw an old friend who lost quite a bit of weight and I told her she looked fantastic. Then she told me that she had lost about 30 pounds but she was gaining it back during the holidays. A lot of people, including myself, are in the same boat around the holidays. I will work hard all year to stay fit and eat right. Then right around Christmas time I start finding “chocolate santas” in my mailbox at work and my aunt from up north will start sending her famous “peanut butter balls” to the family in Florida. I love sugar, especially chocolate, and they are so hard to resist. If you are feeling the same way, you are not alone. I posted a link below to a site that gives some good tips on how to enjoy the food you love, but in moderation.

My Exercise Club

I like to stress the importance of living a healthy and fit lifestyle during childhood and teen years. Some of you already know that I sponsor an exercise club at the school I work at. We meet one Friday each month and try to stay active by lifting weights, throwing the football around, jump roping, or shooting hoops. The students range from ages 14-17 and they stay active outside of school by running track, playing football, etc. On the first club day we discussed healthy eating and workout habits. Then of course, I took them outdoors to give them fun little pushup and situp assessments. :) Below I posted a link about motivating teenagers to exercise and eat right.

Blue Spring Adventure

This is a video of a canoe trip to Blue Spring on the Chassahowitzka River here in Southwest Florida. This is a beautiful place full of wonderful scenery and wildlife.

Canoeing is one of the best exercises for upper body strength. It works the back, biceps, triceps, shoulders, chest and the core. Canoeing is a great way to explore nature and build upper body and core strength.

Here is a link to my Google map showing you the location of blue Spring. Click on the wavy lines to see the embedded video.

This is a video of “Richard’s 5k Run For Life” I did on Friday night in Ybor City, Fl. The race was a fund raiser for cancer so at the end of it, we got to have food and drinks that were donated by restaurants. The run was an excellent way to socialize, share great food, and stay fit. I ran the 5k in about 27 minutes, which is my personal best. Here are some tips I have for running a 5k, based on my own personal experience.

1. Have good shoes. Shoes are extremely important when running a race and good running shoes provide support on the arch side of the shoe. I run in Reeboks and they have worked for me.

2. Perform active stretches before the race. Active stretching will get the blood flowing and the muscles loosened up.

2. Breath in your nose and out your mouth when you are running. Improper breathing may lead to stiff joints and cramping.

3. Pace yourself. You may want to start out like Road Runner at first because you are excited, but don’t give into this or you will lose stamina quickly. Start off at a slow pace and gradually build it.

4. Stay hydrated. Admittedly I started to cramp up in the middle of the race, but I drank the water the volunteers were handing out in the middle of the race, and the cramps went away.

5. Keep your head up and your body straight. Slouching is not only bad for your posture as you run, but it will slow you down.

6. Practice running before the race. Before the 5k I ran 4 miles so the 5k didn’t seem so long.

7. Perform static stretching after the race. Static stretching is really important to stretch out the muscles so they don’t cramp up the next day.

Metabolism and age

I often hear people in their 30s and 40s say, “I can’t keep weight off like I did in my teens and early 20s.” Metabolism typically slows down as you age but you can improve your level of fitness with age. It is possible to be in better shape in your 30s and 40s than you were in your 20s. I have observed that people who never had weight issues as kids struggle with their weight as adults. I think this is because they never had to work really hard at staying fit. My genetic disposition is such that I have always had to workout hard to keep excess weight off. At age 32 I feel like I am in the best shape of my life. I posted a link to an article that explains how the metabolism works as you age, and how to stay fit as you grow older.
