This is a video of “Richard’s 5k Run For Life” I did on Friday night in Ybor City, Fl. The race was a fund raiser for cancer so at the end of it, we got to have food and drinks that were donated by restaurants. The run was an excellent way to socialize, share great food, and stay fit. I ran the 5k in about 27 minutes, which is my personal best. Here are some tips I have for running a 5k, based on my own personal experience.

1. Have good shoes. Shoes are extremely important when running a race and good running shoes provide support on the arch side of the shoe. I run in Reeboks and they have worked for me.

2. Perform active stretches before the race. Active stretching will get the blood flowing and the muscles loosened up.

2. Breath in your nose and out your mouth when you are running. Improper breathing may lead to stiff joints and cramping.

3. Pace yourself. You may want to start out like Road Runner at first because you are excited, but don’t give into this or you will lose stamina quickly. Start off at a slow pace and gradually build it.

4. Stay hydrated. Admittedly I started to cramp up in the middle of the race, but I drank the water the volunteers were handing out in the middle of the race, and the cramps went away.

5. Keep your head up and your body straight. Slouching is not only bad for your posture as you run, but it will slow you down.

6. Practice running before the race. Before the 5k I ran 4 miles so the 5k didn’t seem so long.

7. Perform static stretching after the race. Static stretching is really important to stretch out the muscles so they don’t cramp up the next day.
